Testing Services Frequently Asked Questions
Starting December 22nd, 2023, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will officially retire all Testing Services, to include ScanTron bubble sheet scanning. The University will support any instructors who would like to continue using bubble sheet testing by transitioning them to the Gradescope platform.
The Gradescope service is a self-service model with support available through KU IT’s Academic Technology team. You can reach them at itedtech@ku.edu.

The field of testing and scanning services has shifted significantly since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Over the past several years, we experienced a significant decline in requests for services and an increase in adoption of Gradescope. As we have emerged from the COVID experience, these trends have continued. This change aligns with the university’s strategic focus on shifting resources and investment to areas of greater need.
The last day Instructors will be able to use Testing Services is December 22nd, 2023. Gradescope supports and services are available now and after December 22nd.
Testing Services will not be available after December 22, 2023. All documentation and archived records will be maintained per KU Administrative Policy.
A key benefit of Gradescope is its integration with Canvas. It also provides increased flexibility in grading and data analysis. Contact KU IT’s Academic Technology team at itedtech@ku.edu for more information.
No. Students will have to use Gradescope Bubble Sheets which can be printed from Gradescope’s website.
The move to Gradescope brings significant changes to the scanning process. Faculty, teaching assistants or department support staff will scan answer sheets using the scan function on a standard printer to generate PDF files. The files will then need to be uploaded to the Gradescope website.

Students can also upload a PDF version of their assignment using a mobile device. Information on the Gradescope mobile app can be found here. Currently this app is only available to students in the United States.

You can use any multifunction printer with a scanning option. Many departments and the libraries across campus should have a printer that allows for this function.

You can scan all exams at one time, in one batch, even if there are multiple versions of your exam.
After you have scanned your exam, you will convert the scans into one single PDF.
This PDF file will then be uploaded into Gradescope so you can evaluate and analyze the results.

Students will access their grades through Gradescope. Once the students have logged into Gradescope with their School Credentials. They will need to select the name of the course they want to review. After selecting the course, the students will see the grades on their dashboard.
You can contact Gradescope directly. They have an amazing customer support staff who will respond to you in a timely manner.
