Psychiatry Services @ CAPS

CAPS has two board certified psychiatrists with extensive experience in the field of psychiatry and college mental health. CAPS psychiatry services are available to currently enrolled KU students who are receiving therapy through CAPS. Psychiatric evaluations involve a patient centered, comprehensive assessment including review of current concerns, prior treatment, medical history, academic and social functioning, substance use, and any factors that interfere with achieving your personal goals.

Common issues that prompt referral to psychiatry include diagnostic clarification, anxiety or depression symptoms that do not adequately respond to therapy alone, ADHD, OCD, neurodevelopmental concerns, etc. If you have already been diagnosed or treated for a mental health condition, please have those records sent to CAPS before the psychiatric evaluation.

If the psychiatrist recommends medication they will explain the reasons, potential benefit/risk, and all other relevant information so you can make an informed choice. If you choose to start medication, your psychiatrist will prescribe and closely monitor via follow up appointments. Our psychiatrists take your health and wellbeing seriously and are committed to providing high quality, evidence based, and ethical care.

How do I get started?

If you are interested in seeing one of our psychiatrists, you will need to first schedule an Initial Consultation with one of our therapists. If you are already established with a therapist at CAPS, please talk to your therapist about getting started with psychiatry.
