About Counseling and Psychological Services

Our Mission

Counseling and Psychological Services empowers Jayhawks to thrive by supporting and promoting mental health and well-being.

Our Goals

CAPS aims to assist students in improving decision-making; identifying and using resources; and achieving academic, social and personal success.

About CAPS

Located in Watkins Memorial Health Center, CAPS is a unit within the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and works with many university departments to maintain our focus on serving students.

Diversity Statement

The staff of Counseling and Psychological Services is dedicated to promoting an environment of respect and appreciation for the race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, age, ancestry, physical/mental ability, status as a veteran, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, and socioeconomic status of all persons. We are committed to creating and maintaining an atmosphere of openness, trust, and safety where all attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors can be freely explored and discussed. We fully embrace providing high-quality services that affirm the dignity, worth and value of all individuals. In doing so, we strive to provide a welcoming and enriching environment that is conducive to the intellectual, emotional, and social development of our diverse community.

Regarding intern recruitment, our website serves as our introduction to potential applicants and, as such, we believe it communicates our interest in and commitment to diversity. It includes the KU Statement on Diversity and Inclusion, and the CAPS Statement on Diversity (see below). It provides a link to the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (located in the Office of the Provost, underscoring the importance of this office), where prospective applicants can access information about resources (e.g., Asian and Asian American Faculty and Staff Council, Sexuality and Gender Diversity Faculty and Staff Council) and events on campus (e.g., the upcoming events at this writing include a talk by a journalist and transgender rights activist, and the next talk in the Tribal Sovereignty Series). It provides a link to the Office of Multicultural Affairs, where applicants can access information about programs and services this office provides. It also includes information about the KU and Lawrence communities as we assume, for example, that applicants who are unfamiliar with this area would not know that KU has a performing arts center that can accommodate Broadway shows and full symphony orchestras, or that Lawrence is the home of Haskell Indian Nations University and the cultural exposure and opportunities that it provides.
